Solar Water Heating
Use the natural warmth of the sun to meet your domestic water heating needs. Solar panels are an effective and relatively low cost solution. Their affordability means they are frequently the first choice of renewable energy installation among environmentally conscious consumers.
Although there are over 80,000 solar water heating installations in the UK, numbers have been limited in Northern Ireland. However, since the Reconnect grant programme was launched, there has been a marked increase in the rate of installation of solar water heating panels.
Even in Northern Ireland’s climate, solar water heating panels can perform very well, provided they are placed on a south facing roof. In fact, this region has sufficient solar resource to provide around 50% of a typical household’s hot water, mostly during the summer. And even in winter, a solar panel can heat a hot water cylinder to 30oC, which reduces the energy requirement of the households’s main heating source. There are two main types of solar collectors, flat plate collectors and evacuated tube collectors.
