Solar Water Heating
General Information

Use the natural warmth of the sun to meet your domestic water heating needs. Solar panels are an effective and relatively low cost solution. Their affordability means they are frequently the first choice of renewable energy installation among environmentally conscious consumers.

Even in Northern Ireland's climate, solar water heating panels perform effectively, provided they are placed on a south facing roof. In fact, Northern Ireland has sufficient solar energy to provide around 50% of a typical household’s hot water, mostly during the summer. Even in the winter, a solar panel can heat a hot water cylinder to 30°C, which reduces the energy requirement of the households main heating source. There are two main types of solar collectors, flat plate collectors and evacuated tube collectors.

Costs/Savings

The average cost of installing a Solar Water Heating system is usually between £2000 and £4000. The difference in price can depend on the type of product and size of system that you choose.

Best Practice

A SWH system must be positioned on a roof or a wall bracket, which is facing between South-East and South-West. This is essential in order to gain the maximum performance from the solar panels.
